Welcome to the new version of the Unlocking Essex's Past website!
In addition to all the usual features, we have now added a GIS application which enables you to view monuments on a map
and search for others in the same area. Extra features added to the monument search means you can search for a site
by name or by status, so you can now search specifically for listed buildings. We have also updated the database and added
more photographs, so there is now even more information than ever before on this site!
We hope you enjoy using this site, but if you have any problems, queries or suggestions, please do not hesitate to get
in touch with us. You can also use the online feedback form, post a note on the bulletin board, or contact us directly
by clicking on the help button.

St Peters-on-the-Wall, Bradwell on Sea
This chapel was almost certainly built by Bishop (later Saint) Cedd in 654 AD during the conversion of the East Saxons, mentioned in documentary sources. It is made of reused Roman material such as ashlar (faced stone) and brick from the nearby Roman fort of Othona, and stands across the latter's west wall.
