Welcome to the new version of the Unlocking Essex's Past website!
In addition to all the usual features, we have now added a GIS application which enables you to view monuments on a map
and search for others in the same area. Extra features added to the monument search means you can search for a site
by name or by status, so you can now search specifically for listed buildings. We have also updated the database and added
more photographs, so there is now even more information than ever before on this site!
We hope you enjoy using this site, but if you have any problems, queries or suggestions, please do not hesitate to get

Thaxted guildhall
The guildhall in Town Street, Thaxted, was constructed in 1450 on ground owned by the Borough since the fourteenth century. It is a three-storeyed, timber-framed and plastered building, roughly square in plan, with a tiled roof. It appears that the ‘open’ ground floor of the Guild Hall was a covered market space, with stalls rather than permanent shops.
