Description Newhall moat. Enclosed to N?. <1> Moat surrounds house and the inner bank has a brick retaining wall. Remains of a second enclosure to the north. House is part brick and part timber-frame, early 16th century with C17 additions (in fact house was probably built in 1544, see below). RCHM also record a C17 outbuilding. <2> Moat and chapel associated with house. A small building was possibly a porch and may once have been a porch to the chapel as it was once called the `chapel'. Morant claims there was a chapel, but he gives no authority. <3> <4> <5> Nearly complete homestead moat around the house. Originally c70m east-west x c70m north-south, with waterfilled arms 7m wide. Part of the south arm has been filled in <6> in <1> Tracing from Stokes' sketch in SMR. <1> photo in SMR. <7> Other ref: <8> A manorial complex was probably established here bt Sir Thomas Josselyn soon after 1544. The complex consisted of a large brick-lined moat, a house of E-plan with two storey porch and a court-hall. RCHM recorded part of the house, chapel and gatehouse in 1914, (according to DOE, the original record card is more informative than the Inventory) but the remaining part was destroyed by enemy action in 1943 (NMR photos record the wreckage). A C16 barn with one aisle survives, 60m SW of the moat. The barn has brick nogging on those elevations which would be seen from the south and south east. The roof has plain crown posts. The manor was described as Newhall-Jocelyn in the inquisition post mortem of Sir Thomas Josselyn of 1562, and the house is named as such in John Norden's county map of 1594. It seems that Sir Thomas Josselyn established a new manorial site there, in preference to the older site near the parish church. Field names record 2 brick kiln sites near the house, where the present bricks were probably made. Further details on file at Essex Record Office. <9> -<14> NMP analysis revealed site of second enclosure to the north showing as a soilmark some 70m square with entrance in northern side. Northern circuit appears to be double-ditched. <15>-<18> Area = 0.15 Site Assessment = Newhall and chapel remains destroyed by bombing in 1943. Site now part of garden and a new farmhouse has been built over the site of the chapel. <3> "This barn is of exceptional interest as an early example of brick nogging, and as a late example of crownpost construction." <9>
