Description Possible motte or ornamental mound? <1> A large oval-shaped mound 31.5m long x 28m wide x 1.6m high. The outer ditch is approximately 4m wide and 0.5m deep. Overgrown with trees and shrubs. The ditch is visible around the north east arc but no trace in the south west, adjacent to the drive where refuse has been tipped. Purpose of mound not known. Possibly an ornamental feature associated with the present Down Hall (1868 on the site of an earlier house of the late 17th-early 18th century. "The possibility that it is a motte cannot be dismissed, though no bailey is apparent". <2> Tracing of plan from the OScard is in the SMR. <3> Ice house built into mound (see 4451)
