| Description |
Moat surrounds C17 house. Reset in a screen in the hall are several glass quarries, each with a bird. Illustration in RCHM. <1> Subrectangular moat, waterfilled and complex, except for part of the NW arm. Overall, it measures 112m x 110m, with an average width of the arms of 8m. It is on ground sloping SW down to the river 300m away. Water is fed into the moat from a spring at the W angle and flows on into a ditch at the S. The original entrance was probably on the NW arm, the site of the present drive to the house. <3> in <2> Copy of OS plan card is in SMR. <4> Incomplete, subrectangular moat. <5> Sketch plan on back MSRG card. <6> Diamond-leaded window containing 11 medieval stained glass quarries, in the house (see 8219 for house). 10 depict birds, one a tree. Window is not in situ, but has been recorded since C18. Formerly a palace of the Bishops of London. Traces of older buildings may remain under the present decoration. <7>
