Description Moat. <1> Moat rectangular and revetted on the inner face with early 16th century brick walls. At the north west and south west angles are early 16th century octagonal brick turrets, with moulded plinths and elaborate cappings, 'forming a type of pinnacle'. Cruciform loops in the outer faces of each turret. Inner face has doorway with four-centred. <2> <3> Other ref: <4> `Killegrews olim Shenvills' is `Shenfeldes' 1497, `Shenfeld' 1542, `Shenvil(l)s Farm 1743. Originally a manorial name for the messuage held by William de Shenefelde in 1279 from Shenfield `supra' 169. <5> Some are of walls are of early 16th century brick. <6> Originally early 16th century moated manor house built by John Berdefeld of Shenfield (1477-1514). <6> 2 photo cards with OS cards. <7> 9 photos in the SMR. <8> Colour photo in SMR. <11> Sketch plan on back MSRG card seems to show a possible other ditched enclosure next to the main moat. <9> The walls are less than 1m high on the west, north west and south west but c2m high on the north east side and east side. A large section of wall on the east side has been removed. <10> For detailed description see <13> Site Management: = Scheduled Monument Consent granted in 1989 for removal of vegetation and decayed bricks, and repair of walls. <12> Site Assessment = 'Very well kept and in good condition'. <1>
