Description Mound, probably site of a wind mill, c100ft in diameter at base and 12ft high. <1> Artificial mound in garden of a cottage known as Mill cottage. Approximately 3.5m high, flat top approx 16.2 x 10.6m. Originally may have been circular but it seems a sloping extension was built on the east side from the top of the mound down to the road. A wet ditch surrounds roughly half the perimeter on the west side of the mound. South side of mound faces front of cottage and has been made into a rockery. Excavated 1946-1947. Quaker burials found (see 1256). French (source 3) spoke of the mound as a barrow, presumably early British. No finds from excavation could be used to date the mound. Certain of mound may have been missed so uncertainty about presence or otherwise of a primary interment. Mound generally thought to be a tumulus, also used as a mill mound and a quaker burial ground (see 1255, 1256). <2> <3> Feature takes advantage of exposed position in level area. Appearance and shape of mound typical of wind mill mounds in the region. Ditch seems to be contemporary with the mound, no evidence it ever completely surrounded it. OS 1975 seems to suggest it was a mill wind mound. <5> in <4>
