Neolithic Essex

The archaeology of the Neolithic period in Essex is dominated by special monuments, such as causewayed camps and long barrows. The landscape was still largely wooded, and the coastline extended farther out to sea than it does today.

Settlement sites are relatively rare, and the nature of the settlement is not always easy to work out. It seems likely that some sites were still occupied seasonally and that there was no sudden shift to a settled lifestyle based on farming.
