Neolithic Farms and Forts

Domestic sites in the Neolithic period are generally represented by concentrations or "scatters" of flints on the ploughsoil, and below the ground the site may have pits which contain Neolithic pottery and flints. At the Stumble, the large amounts of flint and pottery were accompanied by structural remains and middens (spreads of refuse), as well as a wide range of plant food remains. This included remains of cereals, roots, tubers, and fragments of hazelnut and other wild plant remains, which might suggest a mixture of cultivated and gathered food sources.
