GIS

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow us to map sites, findspots, and pretty much anything else with complete accuracy. The data is faster to input, takes up less room and is considerably easier to manipulate - as you may have noticed if youíve used the GIS application on this website (go to Search and then Map Search)!

Information stored on GIS also conforms to certain standards, which in time will mean that sharing information between countries, even where they donít speak the same language, will be as easy as sending an e-mail, and much larger projects will be possible.

GIS can also be linked to the use of the Global Positioning System, or GPS. The technology is now so advanced that this can take the form of a small handheld device which sends a signal to a satellite in outer space, and calculates from the satelliteís location exactly where the user is standing.
