Saxon Trade

Much of the network of Roman roads and communications must have survived into the Saxon period, and it seems likely that these continued to be used for a time. The ever important waterways were also still well used for travel and trading.

There is evidence that links with the Germanic homelands of the Saxon peoples were maintained for some time after their settlement in this country, and with Norse settlers to the North there were also links with the Scandinavian countries. To travel by ship across the North Sea would rarely take as long as travelling across the country on foot, and so it is perhaps not surprising that coastal areas such as Essex should look upon those across the Sea as their neighbours.
