Stuart Essex

The Stuart period begins with the accession to the throne of James Stuart, known as James I of England, VI of Scotland. Elizabeth I had agreed that when she died her throne would pass to James in order to pacify the Scots during her reign, and because she had no obvious successor.

The period saw a great deal of civil unrest, related to both political and religious issues. However, it was also a period of exploration, with many people emigrating to the New World, the Americas, in search of a new life, and the first Mayflower which sailed to the Americas in 1620 was probably built at Harwich sometime before 1606.
