Help -> Monument Search

The monument search is very powerful, it gives you a whole host of options for searching for details of monuments that you may be interested
in. You can search for monuments based on their name, type of monument, period, area, or the site status.

See below for the options that are available for you on this screen;

Use this box to enter the name of the monument that you are looking for. The system will then match up all the monuments that contain the word or words you enter.

If you are interested in a particular type of monument then enter the type in the box and then click "Find Type" button. If this type is supported in the database then you will be able to select it. If you would prefer to browse for the monument type, then if you click on the "Browse Types" button, then you will be presented with a hierarchical set of monument types. If you find one that you are interested in, then select it from the list provided. If you are interested in monument types that are related to the one that you have chosen, then make sure you click the box marked "include related monument types in the search". This widens the search, and ensures that if you choose a particularly specific monument type, you will not miss details of monuments that are closely related, but may have been classified slightly differently.

If you know the range of dates of monuments that you are interested in, then use the input boxes marked "from" and "to". However if you would prefer, you can choose a particular period from the options provided in the drop down list.

The location of all the monuments is stored in the database, which makes it very easy to find all the monuments in a particular area. If you know the area that you are interested in, then type the name of it into the box provided, then click on the "Find Area" button. This will match up the name of the area that you have typed in, to the names of areas that are stored in the database. If there is a match, you will then be presented with the list of areas that matched what you typed in. If however, you would like to browse the list of areas that are stored in the system, then you can do this by clicking on the "Browse Areas" button. Now you can view the internal hierarchy of areas.
