Welcome to the new version of the Unlocking Essex's Past website!

In addition to all the usual features, we have now added a GIS application which enables you to view monuments on a map and search for others in the same area. Extra features added to the monument search means you can search for a site by name or by status, so you can now search specifically for listed buildings. We have also updated the database and added more photographs, so there is now even more information than ever before on this site!

St Osyth Priory
The Priory of St Osyth was founded before 1127 (possibly in 1121), for the Austin Canons, by Richard de Belmeis, Bishop of London, and became an Augustinian Abbey in about 1200 AD. The priory was suppressed in 1539, and in 1553 it came into the possession of Lord Darcy who converted some of the buildings into a house and levelled others, including the abbey church (now under the rose garden).   more...
