Description Site of Roman building indicated by finds scatter, reported initially by D Biglin, in course of field walking. Checked by L Savory, C Couchman who collected further surface scatter. Biglin suggests that present trackway linking field with Roman building to church at Broomfield (has Roman material in the fabric) may be a Roman road. <1> Site is in fields (Hither and Hinte Dragonsfoot). Roman remains recorded from site. Both fields under cultivation, most of Roman scatter was in the southern field, a concentration of building debris around a depression just south of a pond on the north boundary. Finds by M J Cuddeford: imbrice, tegula fragments, hypocaust tiles, plain Samian sherds, 2 Castor ware sherds, Roman coarseware sherds, coin of Victorinus, small strip of bronze, perhaps part of a bracelet, end part of a bronze bracelet, lump of concrete of mortar and pounded tile fragments, piece of stucco with traces of mortar and coarse plaster, Oxford wares. <2> Finds by Biglin, Couchman and Savory: brick, tile, decorated hypocaust tile, grey ware, coarse ware (all very weathered), plaster, mortared brick, roller stamped flue tile, Roman sherds. <3> Other ref: <4> Tile and Samian ware found at Broomfield Villa site by Graham Farley while field walking in 1993. Colchester type brooch and 11 coins found by metal detectorist, M Cuddeford in 1993. The brooch dates to early to mid-C1AD. Included amongst coins are Claudian, Victorinus, Carausius and Crispus ones.<5><6><7>
